Why Social Media Usage Is Becoming Safer

Right about now, as you read this article, your every activity on the internet is being recorded. It’s a given fact that if you use the internet, you are being tracked one way or another. Furthermore, using social media has increased privacy related concerns of ordinary folks; As a result, many social media fans have stopped using social media websites such as linked in, Facebook, Google plus, and twitter.
However, with that being said, it’s not just social media websites that contain your sensitive information, email servers such as Gmail, Hotmail and live.com are also prone to attacks by identity thieves – given the fact that your emails can contain bits of sensitive information. Thankfully, HTTPS connections make it possible to connect to a particular website – without worrying about being exposed to the various threats on the internet. Many websites using the traditional HTTP connection are quickly switching over to HTTPS connections after realizing its security and safety. In the past, countries that strictly monitored social media activities of activists often were able to locate, capture and prosecute activists. With HTTPS becoming a standard connection type on all major social media websites, it has become impossible for strict regimes to locate, capture, and prosecute those using social media to raise awareness.

However, with that being said, one should have the browser to support such secure connections – in this case an HTTPS connection. If you are using the default Internet Explorer browser, it may not support HTTPS connections – especially if it’s an outdated version of IE. Thus, data security experts recommend that you switch over to Firefox – since it has a wide range of security plug-ins, you can use to surf the internet safely and securely. Sadly, you cannot guarantee the safety of all websites. Luckily, there is a solution to that and it’s known as a Virtual Private Network or VPN for short. A VPN is able to encrypt your connection to the internet; moreover, it actually changes your physical location (your IP address). For example, even though you are in the Middle East, with a VPN connection, it may appear that you are somewhere in the United States (locations will vary, depending on the IP your VPN assigns your computer). Moreover, using a VPN connection also makes good sense, as it not only safeguards your privacy but can also prevent man-in-the-middle attacks; in addition; it can also prevent search engines from tracking your location. The best part of using a VPN is that you’ll be able to access nearly all the banned websites in your country – so, a VPN, plus an HTTPS connection can most definitely insure the safety and security of your online presence.

Next, sensitive documents -- whatever they may be, should be locked and hidden using data security software which is developed to Lock Folders. Moreover, invest in good antivirus software which will help you prevent viruses from getting into your personal computer.

Finally some additional tips to keep in mind are:

• Do not click on random button which prompts you to run a program.

• Never give out personal information promising you something for free in return.

• Don’t use the same password for all websites.
